REACT Initiative, Inc. is a nonprofit organization advancing equity, access, and linguistic justice in education and communication. We design culturally sustaining professional learning experiences for educators, speech-language pathologists, and allied professionals.

REACT is an ASHA Approved Continuing Education (CE) Provider and offers Texas Education Agency (TEA)–approved Continuing Professional Education (CPE) units. Courses accessed through this page are hosted by REACT and reflect a shared commitment with Respect the Dialect to honoring language, culture, and community through actionable learning.

This webinar is designed to support speech-language pathologists in identifying key features of African American English (AAE) across linguistic domains. The course explores strategies to promote more effective assessment and service delivery for AAE-speaking students.

Course:  The (B)lack Narrative 

Description:

This live webinar course will help participants recognize and challenge deficit ideologies surrounding Black literacy. We will discuss the pervasiveness of deficit ideologies and their role in perpetuating inequities in school and beyond. Participants will gain insights about fostering equity and inclusivity while exploring strategies to build upon the cultural and linguistic funds of knowledge that Black students bring to the classroom.
